Because it is "always wise to have a degree”

Arthur studies Dutch Language and Literature. During his student days he wins the Groninger Student Cabaret Festival. A year later he is asked to join the then to be founded stand-up comedygroup Comedytrain. Arthur has no idea what stand-up comedy is, but has nothing to do since he graduated and is happy to have "work.”

Cabaret and stand up

From 1990 to 1994, Arthur is a regular at Comedytrain. He also performs a number of times in American comedy clubs. In September 1994, together with pianist Alberto Klein Goldewijk, Arthur creates his first full-length cabaret program, Een tekkel met de stok (A dachshund with a stick, 1994). In it he combines songs with stand-up. In the programs thereafter, Kettingen (Chains, 1996), Twee straten verder (Two streets away, 1998) and 100 Helden (100 Heroes, 2000) music becomes increasingly important.

Music

In 1998 his debut CD Twee straten verder is released (Sony Music). Arthur is nominated for an Edison, the single Contract becomes the radio 3 FM megahit.

In the following years the albums 100 heroes (2000), Achterste brug (Rear Bridge, 2002) and Vlak voordat (Just before, 2007) follow, all of which are very well received.

He made his fifth CD, Stilte Opname (Silence recording, 2009), at the request of the Emma Children's Hospital AMC. The lyrics are based on stories of children lying there. On the CD he collaborates with singer Birgit Schuurman. A number of songs are used in the theater performance Achtste groepers huilen niet (Eighth-graders don't cry) based on the children's book by Jacques Vriens. The show is awarded the Musicalworld Award 2011 for Best Youth Performance.

Arthur also writes songs for the shows Oorlogsgeheimen (War secrets) and Brammetje Baas.

Books

In April 2006, his debut novel Midden op de weg, zo hard mogelijk (Middle of the Road, as hard as possible) is released, which is about a grandson who follows the tracks of his grandfather who was a spy in World War II. The story is largely (auto)biographical.

The book is nominated for the Anton Wachter Prize, the Selexyz debutant prize and awarded the LIBRA debutant prize.

It was followed by De hartslag van de aarde (The puls of the earth, 2008), which story is loosely based on the life story of his other grandfather who was a geologist and wrote a book on global warming and cooling as early as the 1940s.

Arthur's third novel, Hotel Sofia, about four friends who see each other again after thirty years, was placed in the top five best Dutch novels of 2012 by Belgium National Newspaper Knack.

May 2015 sees the publication of his new novel Paradise Village (2015) about a hunted bank manager who flees the country after his bank has to be rescued by the state. On his flight, he takes his 11-year-old son with him and discovers that he doesn't actually know him at all.

For Wat we weten (What We Know,2017), Arthur delves into the world of refugees and status holders. For two years, he follows three brothers who have fled Aleppo and are trying to build an existence here. It is a loving portrait and at the same time a cynical account of an impossible asylum policy.

In 2021, his first nonfiction work De wederafbouw van de satire (The Deconstruction) of Satire ) is published. This pamphlet in which Arthur makes a pithy plea for humor that pushes the edges leads to much needed discussion and media attention. In 2022 Met de prins op reis (With the prince on a journey), a travel account of a so-called goodwill trip by Prince Bernhard with in his wake his private secretary Frans de Graaff, Arthur's great uncle, to South America, is published.

And on

From 2015 to 2022, Arthur was president of Comedytrain, the company of which he has been a member since its inception. He was also for three years (2015-2018) a columnist (the presser) at the National Dutch radioprogram De NieuwsBV.

Since 2019, he has been artistic director of De Speld Live, a branch of the popular satirical news site De Speld.

He also teaches on an irregular basis at the conservatory in Groningen and at the Querido academy in Amsterdam.
